Replacing Hardwood Floors with LVP

Should you swap damaged or worn hardwood for luxury vinyl plank? What the process looks like and what to consider first.

Consider refinishing first

Worn hardwood can often be sanded and refinished to look new. If the boards are solid and thick enough, this may be the better value.

When LVP makes sense

Water damage, heavy pet traffic or a move to a rental often make LVP the practical choice.

The process

Old flooring is removed or, in some cases, LVP is floated over a flat existing floor. The subfloor is checked for flatness and moisture, underlayment goes down, then planks and new baseboards or shoe molding.

Check transitions and doors

Changing floor height can affect door clearances and transitions to tile. A good installer plans these details before starting.

Flooring installation in Palo Alto neighborhoods

Every Palo Alto neighborhood has its own housing style, so flooring installation in Palo Alto is never one-size-fits-all. Here is how we approach it across Palo Alto:

Professorville, Palo Alto: early-1900s shingle and craftsman homes where historic review can apply.

Old Palo Alto, Palo Alto: large older homes on big lots, often with original hardwood and plaster walls.

Crescent Park, Palo Alto: spacious homes near San Francisquito Creek, popular for whole-home remodels.

Midtown, Palo Alto: mid-century ranch homes well suited to kitchen and bath updates.

Barron Park, Palo Alto: a semi-rural feel with varied lot sizes, good candidates for ADUs.

College Terrace, Palo Alto: smaller lots near Stanford where space-efficient layouts matter.

Duveneck/St. Francis, Palo Alto: many Eichler homes with post-and-beam construction and radiant floors.

Wherever you live in Palo Alto, we check Palo Alto permit requirements early so your project stays on schedule.

Material delivery times to Palo Alto

We're based in Palo Alto, so job sites in Palo Alto are close. Typical drive times from our base to Palo Alto neighborhoods: Professorville 10–15 min, Old Palo Alto 10–15 min, Crescent Park 10 min, Midtown 10–15 min, Barron Park 15–20 min, College Terrace 15 min, Duveneck/St. Francis 10 min.

Typical material lead times for Palo Alto projects (estimates, confirmed with suppliers per job): in-stock paint and LVP flooring 1–3 days; hardwood flooring 3–10 days plus 3–7 days of on-site acclimation; special-order tile 2–6 weeks; quartz or stone countertops 1–3 weeks after templating; windows and doors 4–10 weeks; custom cabinets 6–12 weeks.
